Pickering Christian School is the first in Canada implementing the Foundations and Frameworks reading programme.
Developed after years of scientific research related to teaching and learning and research on effective reading and thinking instruction, Foundations and Frameworks offers these young Canadians a comprehensive and innovative approach to reading instruction.
Students at Pickering Christian School now enjoy a protected reading time every school day. Groans about reading during the first days of school are quickly turning into enthusiasm, as students glow with confidence as a result of reading quality literature at their particular levels. Students also revel in the freedom of having some choice in the books they read. Reading is no longer a class project: it is quickly becoming an individual passion. Comments about a particular book are heard in the halls after class. Students are saying things like, "Oh, I read that book," or "You're reading the same book that I am. Students are also beginning to discover that they can even read the books that have not been assigned to them. The library and bookstores are beginning to be somewhere that Pickering Christian School students want to go!
Research confirms the success of the Foundations and Frameworks reading programme. Reading comprehension, as measured by the TORC - 3, found overall that students' comprehension scores increased.
More than fifty percent of students tested showed an increase of 15-70 percent in their reading comprehension, with the average increase of these students being 25 percent.
Eighty-eight percent of students agreed to having a better understanding of the material that they read.
Eighty-nine percent of parents agreed to observing an increase in their child's comprehension skills at home.
